Preservative

Pet food fats go rancid when exposed to oxygen, especially in dry kibble during storage. Preservatives prevent this. Synthetic options (BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin) are cheap and effective but have various health concerns documented in animal studies. Natural options (mixed tocopherols, rosemary extract, ascorbic acid, citric acid) cost more but are widely considered safer. Premium brands have largely shifted to natural preservation.
