AAFCO publishes detailed nutrient profiles specifying minimum (and sometimes maximum) levels of protein, fat, individual amino acids, vitamins, and minerals required for dog and cat food at different life stages. Manufacturers can demonstrate compliance by showing their formula meets these profiles via lab analysis or formulation calculation. The alternative (and stronger) path is feeding trials. Nutrient profiles are revised periodically based on new nutritional research.
